World’s largest brewer develops greener way to put bubbles in beer

The world’s largest brewer, The Belgium-based company AB InBev, is rolling out what it claims is a greener way to put bubbles in beer and reduce its CO2emissions by 5 %.

AB InBev says it has developed a technique to generate gas bubbles needed for the malting of grains before fermentation without the need to boil the water and hops.

The method it has developed does not detract from the taste of the finished drink, its says, while using less heat and water.

Bubbles are said to be crucial in determining the taste of a beer. Traditionally, gas bubbles in the early stages of brewing are generated through the natural cooking process, requiring bountiful levels of water and heat. AB InBev says, however, it is able to simulate the effects of boiling the brew.

The new method involves heating the brew to below boiling point and then blowing nitrogen or CO2 into the tank to create bubbles without changing the taste. The company claims that because the beer is brewed at a lower temperature in the early phase, it can also stay fresh for longer. The bubbles found in the finished product are still to be produced in the normal way, typically by the yeast’s digestion of sugars or by pressurisation in the kegging process.

David De Schutter, the company’s research director for Europe, said: “Our innovation is to heat everything up to just below boiling point, which provides 80 % energy savings at this point in time. There is a lot less steam released, which allows you to spend less on water. In our case, we managed to go from 5 % evaporated water to less than 1 %.”

AB InBev claims that when it has adopted the technique in all its breweries around the world it will reduce its global CO2-emissions by 5 % a year, equivalent to the energy consumption of 120,000 families.

Studies suggest there will be 80 % less evaporation as a result of a 0.5 % reduction in water consumption, said to be “the equivalent of 1,200 Olympic swimming pools”.

Nestlé Target 100% Recyclable Packaging by 2025

Nestlé has joined the growing number of multinational companies, which are recognising their crucial role in reducing the amount of global plastic waste.

Nestlé is now aiming to make all its products recyclable or reusable within the next eight years.

Nestlé’s CEO Mark Schneider commented: "Plastic waste is one of the biggest sustainability issues the world is facing today. Tackling it requires a collective approach. We are committed to finding improved solutions to reduce, re-use and recycle. Our ambition is to achieve 100% recyclable or reusable packaging by 2025."

To tackle this issue the company is looking to focus on three areas where it can make the most impact: eliminating non-recyclable plastics; adopting plastics which have higher recycling rates, and removing packaging which combine materials making them hard to reuse.

Highlighting the need for “developing a circular economy”, Nestlé is now committing itself to creating a larger market for plastic recycling, accelerating its own schemes, but also working with supply chain partners on new packaging methods, which reduce waste.

“Nestlé needs to do more to move the needle towards the elimination of problem plastic…A rubbish truck load of plastic enters the ocean every minute and huge multinationals selling plastic products need to play a bigger part in turning the tide. Nestle should remove non-recyclable plastic far sooner than 2025, and phase out all single-use plastic packaging", she added.

Zero Waste Daniel to unveil capsule with gender-neutral Phluid Project


Zero clothing waste pioneer Zero Waste Daniel (ZWD) has partnered with NY's first gender-free clothing store, The Phluid Project, for a pop-up and presentation to reveal a capsule called Gene(cis): Why Do We Dress Like This? A Fashion Story.

In a statement, Rob Smith, founder and CEO of The Phluid Project, explained that the "companies' missions are very much in line, as we both challenge the industry norms."

Daniel Silverstein, founder of ZWD said, "Our mission at ZWD is to eradicate wasteful fashion industry norms by reimagining how to design and create clothing without any waste."

Silverstein went on to explain his company's process, which is to take pre-consumer waste from fashion factory scraps and waste, which is then turned into unisex apparel using a proprietary process ZWD calls ReRoll.

In its third year of business, ZWD has diverted "literal tons" of scrap material from landfills in the New York area.

Smith commended the brand's efforts, stating, "ZWD has shed an impressive light on the power and importance of both zero waste clothing and designing beyond the binary."

The Phluid Project opened last month in New York. It aims to offer consumers an authentic lifestyle brand and community center that is inspired by identity and expression. The space hopes to "empower individuals to be themselves and express themselves openly, without judgement or fear."

ZWD is the first market ready label of unisex clothing made from 100% scrap material and opened its flagship location in Brooklyn last summer.

The ZWD pop-up at The Phluid Project will run for two weeks starting on April 19th with a presentation to celebrate Earth Day, at which the new capsule will be unveiled. Pieces will be available for viewing and purchase at The Phluid Project at 684 Broadway, New York.
